Kilimanjaro

My father and I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2001, when I was 12 years old. At 19,340 feet (5895 meters), Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. When my dad first proposed the idea of climbing Kilimanjaro, I was thrilled by the prospect of seeing Africa, home of zebras, giraffes, elephants, and a multitude of other exotic wildlife.

Although the rest of the family turned down the idea as a family vacation, I was more than happy to go on a little father-daughter excursion. At that point, I had no idea that this would be the start of my goal to climb the "seven summits"—I did not even know what the "seven summits" were. But Kilimanjaro turned out to be a fantastic introduction.
